Maryville College is known for its perseverance through challenging times throughout history. We have overcome many struggles in a way that has allowed us to come out of these situations stronger than before. One of the more troublesome times the college has faced includes the Spanish Flu pandemic infiltrating the campus.
Although, similarly to many who experienced COVID-19, there was, at first, seemingly no reason for panic when news of the Spanish Flu began circulating. It wasn’t until the illness reached Maryville College that the school would begin fighting its spread vigorously. Although many students and faculty survived, some unfortunately did not, and we hope this exhibit will allow their place in Maryville College history to never be forgotten.
This exhibit will guide you through the arrival of Spanish Flu on campus, how the school handled it, and those who lost their lives in the process.
