Spanish Flu Exhibit

Alyce Andes (1920)

Alyce Andes (sometimes spelled “Alice”) was born in Sanford, Florida on February 1, 1901. She was a freshman at Maryville College and was an editor of the Highland Echo. During her time at the school, she participated in plays as well as the Bainonian Literary Society. At the age of nineteen, Andes contracted the Spanish Flu and became hospitalized for nine days until her death on February 8, 1920, at 1:30 am. Her death was noted on the front page of the Highland Echo on February 19, 1920, saying, “She was attractive, interesting, full of life and fun, kind and sympathetic—the kind of girl that all admire. She will be sorely missed on the College Hill”.
