May Day was originally a gathering celebrating the start of spring which would take place on May 1. It welcomed and celebrated spring beginning again. Maryville College originally began May Day as a fundraiser for the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). The first May Day focused on field day activities more than ceremony. Due to World War I, there was a brief pause in all community events including May Day from 1917 through 1919.
In 1937, the senior class decided to change the rules on voting for the May Queen. Do you think this was a better idea?
