The Great Smoky Mountains are a mountain range, much of which are part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The national park was established in 1934. It attracts millions of visitors each year, making it the most visited national park in the United States.

With a campus located 30 minutes or less from the Townsend entrance of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Maryville College has a variety of educational programs and classes that teach about as well as in the Great Smoky Mountains. Area high school students can participate in the Maryville College hosted Great Smokies Experience.
